21A - Reading Reflection No. 2

The Art of Social Media
Guy Kawasaki

The general theme of the book is a step-by-step instructional guide to conquering social media platforms and perfecting your online presence. Kawasaki keeps things interesting by showing how these steps are implemented on his personal social media platforms. He gives you tips on what to do and what not to do, and provides constructive reasoning for those don'ts.

The Art of Social Media connects to ENT 3003 by providing the tools necessary on creating a brand through social media platforms. Not just is your business opportunity your brand, but as the entrepreneur you must also think of yourself as an extension of your brand. In that case you must ensure that your social media presence is both influential, professional, and intriguing. This pertains especially to those entrepreneurs who wish to hold a presence in the technological and digital business worlds, such as app and website creating. If your business is to create an app like my idea of a virtual reality shopping experience, then your social media presence better be up to par. You can't just get by with a photo-less Facebook page or an Instagram account where you only post pictures of food. You have to represent yourself and your brand through the extension of online business presence.

An exercise that could come from the book in relation to this class, would be to generate an Instagram and Facebook page solely for your brand and business. Using the steps in the book, you could generate a social media presence for your opportunity with goals to garner attention and followers, even before the business has taken off. This would serve as good practice for future endeavors, and also as tool to better your current personal online presence today.

The book provides many "aha" moments for the readers by breaking down the technological workings of these social media platforms. Many of the most minor tips provided insight on how to garner more aesthetically pleasing presences. For example, tilting your face slightly away from the camera, as well as having your face off center in a picture is more pleasing to the eye. Many people would find that surprising when we are taught the appreciation for symmetry in our lives. Reading this book helps you understand little quirks that most wouldn't even know about without trial and error. It helps you take my social media presence to the an elevated position, without much effort on the readers behalf.

  1. Hi Shannon,

I did my reading reflection on the same book! I think our exercise ideas are also similar since he is so prominent of making the most of each social platform individually rather than a "one size fits all" mentality when it comes to sharing your content. I also like how you mentioned that you should be intriguing yet professional. I forgot to mention that in my reflection but I know it's something he was pretty big on throughout the book.

  2. This book is so fitting for not only your business but also today’s social media immersed society. We often don’t think about how social media shapes our lives – our businesses even! I would’ve never thought that a social media account could make or break your business, but I guess it’s that day and age! I think this would be an interesting book to read for pleasure!

  3. Shannon,
I really enjoyed reading what you had to say about this book. Nowadays social media has such a huge presence and impact on business, it is truly crucial for businesses to try and perfect this way of marketing. However, this need for a social media presence is even larger for your company since the people you are looking to target are those that would rather use the internet. I think the exercise you said you would like to implement would be great, i think the best way to learn and grow is to try it for yourself. Great job!
